Iowa State’s Tyrese Haliburton headed to NBA draft

Iowa State sophomore guard Tyrese Haliburton is entering the 2020 NBA draft, he told ESPN on Tuesday.

Haliburton, the No. 7 prospect in the ESPN Top 100, emerged as one of the draft class’ elite point guard prospects.cheap nike nfl jerseys china

Haliburton averaged 15.2 points, 6.5 assists, 5.9 rebounds and 2.5 steals for the Cyclones. Despite his season being cut short because of a fractured wrist in February, Haliburton established himself as one of the most intelligent, versatile and efficient playmakers in the country.5

Haliburton is a career 43% 3-point shooter in college.nfl nike jersey cheap

Considered a mid-major recruit for much of his high school career, Haliburton made a rapid ascent in his game to become a likely NBA lottery pick. He took advantage of an injury to Iowa State’s starting point guard as a freshman and eventually emerged on NBA radars with a strong showing at the FIBA U19 World Cup last summer, leading Team USA to a gold medal.

Selection of Jordan Love in first round would be decisive move for Bill Belichick, Patriots

The New England Patriots have three quarterbacks who account for less than $3 million in salary-cap space in Jarrett Stidham, Brian Hoyer and Cody Kessler, easily the lowest financial total at the position in the NFL.

The top question facing the budget-conscious team is obvious: Which low-cost option rises up? With the Patriots so snug to the salary cap, they are limited in what type of significant free-agent addition they might be able to make, which leads to another question: Could a high 2020 NFL draft pick be an avenue they consider?nfl cheap jerseys nike

The Patriots haven’t selected a quarterback in the first round since 1993, when Drew Bledsoe (No. 1 overall) was the pick. That was a different era, when Bill Parcells had just arrived as coach, and hope was restored to a region starved for winning football.4

Under coach Bill Belichick (2000-present), the highest quarterback selected was Jimmy Garoppolo in 2014 — in the latter portion of the second round (No. 62 overall). Third-rounders Kevin O’Connell (2008, No. 94), Ryan Mallett (2011, No. 74) and Jacoby Brissett (2016, No. 91) are next in line.nfl nike jerseys for cheap

So if the Patriots follow through on what ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. says is possible in his latest mock draft — tabbing Utah State quarterback Jordan Love with the No. 23 pick — it would be a decisive move that breaks the Belichick mold.

In that scenario, the Patriots would have to be confident Love is an upgrade from Stidham, who in 2019 had the best preseason of any rookie quarterback under Belichick. They would also have to be willing to concede that Love projects more to 2021 than 2020; considering there will be limited practice time in the offseason — if any during the coronavirus pandemic — relying on any rookies for big things this season seems like risky business.

The Patriots also have several other needs to address, and going with a quarterback would push the team’s opportunity to focus on other spots into the late third round (No. 87), which is when they pick next.

Padres reliever Andres Munoz has Tommy John surgery

Hard-throwing Padres reliever Andres Munoz and minor leaguer Reggie Lawson underwent Tommy John surgery Friday.

Both right-handers were injured shortly before spring training was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.nfl cheap jerseys nike8

Munoz, 21, made his big league debut last year and appeared in 22 games. He went 1-1 with a 3.91 ERA and 30 strikeouts, against 11 walks. He would have been a key member of the Padres’ beefed-up bullpen this season, if and when it resumes.nike nfl jerseys wholesale cheap

The 22-year-old Lawson was 3-1 with a 5.20 ERA in six starts with Double-A Amarillo last season before being shut down with an elbow injury. He returned for the Arizona Fall League, going 1-0 with a 0.82 ERA in three appearances, including two starts.

Jaguars reach 3-year deal with DL Rodney Gunter, source says

The Jacksonville Jaguars have reached agreement on a three-year deal with former Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman Rodney Gunter, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Gunter started 13 games at defensive end for the Cardinals before he was placed on injured reserve in 2019, tallying 31 tackles and three sacks with 10 quarterback hurries. He suffered a toe injury and missed the final three games.nfl nike jerseys cheap china

Gunter, who turned 28 in January, is coming off a one-year deal worth $1.7 million.7

A fourth-round pick of the Cardinals in 2015, Gunter had his best season as a pro in 2018, finishing with career highs in sacks (4.5), tackles (44) and forced fumbles (2).

He has been durable, playing four complete seasons before suffering his injury at the end of 2019.nike jerseys nfl cheap

For his NFL career, he has 11 sacks and 126 tackles.

Football’s coronavirus void makes you appreciate every moment of the game

The last professional football we watched together, before the coronavirus emptied the streets and the stadiums, was the 70th minute of Liverpool’s home leg against Atletico Madrid last Wednesday in the Champions League. The Reds were up 1-0 when my son Sam and I had to leave for his indoor footy final. We turned off the TV, the screen went black, and Sammy grabbed his boots, out the door.

He’s 12 years old and plays; I’m 46 and coach. Our Team Navy had won the league and now faced our archrivals, Team Purple. I felt like we were going to win. Sam was less certain. He warned me on the drive that he might cry if we lost, and I couldn’t be mad if he did.

By the time we took to the turf, my phone informed me that Liverpool were up 2-0 in extra time, and I relayed the score to Sam. He’s been Liverpool for most of his young life, his first season as a genuine fan having ended with Steven Gerrard’s slip. There would be no falling short this year.nike jerseys nfl cheap1

Sam played the way a storm eats the shore. He scored two quick goals to give us our own 2-0 lead. “Let’s go!” he shouted, pumping his little fists. His feet barely touched the ground.cheap official nike nfl jerseys

Football had lifted us to the happy heights it has always taken my beautiful boy and me. It is our principal shared experience. I play and coach and write about it. Sam plays and talks and dreams about it. We know each other so well, we love each other so well, in part because we know and love the same thing outside of ourselves.

But then Team Purple came on. I felt helpless to stop them. All our kids tried. We just couldn’t hold them back. In minutes, our 2-0 lead turned into a 5-3 loss.

After, we elbow-bumped the victors rather than shaking their hands, a small concession to the bug that was surely about to run its minimal course. I gave out silver medals and told Team Navy’s boys and girls how much I had loved watching them play. More elbow bumps, except for Sam. He came in for a hug.

Then I checked my phone again, and Liverpool had also lost somehow, 3-2, a reality almost too strange to digest in the minutes before our entire reality became an impossible fiction. I showed Sam, and now he came in for another hug. It had been a very bad hour for the family business.

Sam left the arena with his mum. I had another game there later that night, this time as a player, old even among other old men, and I sat in the quiet and waited for it to begin. I had no idea what was coming. None of us did. By Friday, everything would be stopped.

Athletics president asks coronavirus patient to throw first pitch on Opening Day

Oakland Athletics president Dave Kaval has reached out to a fan who has said he has tested positive for coronavirus about throwing out the first pitch on Opening Day.

A 39-year-old fan named Justin tweeted a picture Monday of himself wearing an A’s hat while in a hospital bed.nfl cheap nike jerseys

“I have it,” Justin said in his Twitter post. “Don’t sleep on this thing people. I’m a very healthy type I diabetic. My body is fighting it very well but it’s kicking my ass. Don’t be a moron. Stay home!”7

The post came to the attention of Kaval and the A’s after they had already announced Monday that they were donating $100,000 to the Alameda County Community Food Bank to help during the coronavirus pandemic.cheap official nike nfl jerseys

“This is an unprecedented time in our community,” Kaval said in a release after the team’s donation. “As we navigate this pandemic, it is crucial that we come together and help those who need us most.”

Major League Baseball announced Monday it had pushed back Opening Day until mid-May at the earliest after the federal government recommended restricting events of more than 50 people for the next eight weeks because of coronavirus.

Man City’s new right-back Yan Couto can be Brazil’s new hope

It might seem strange, given their commitment to attacking and flair, but the platform for the golden age of Brazilian football was provided by a defensive change. In the 1950s, Brazil dropped an extra player into the heart of defence, creating the modern back four.nike nfl jerseys wholesale cheap

As a result, more cover in the middle allowed Brazil’s full-backs to push forward and enjoy the space in front of them. Thus, the attacking full-back was born — a vital part of the Brazilian mix ever since Nilton Santos scored an unexpected goal from left-back in their 1958 opener. But at the moment that Brazil’s fifth (and so far final) World Cup win in 2002 was getting underway, the latest off the production line of attacking full-backs came into this world.

New Manchester City signing Yan Couto was born on June 3, 2002 just as Cafu was charging up and down the right flank against Turkey, and eventually captaining the team to World Cup glory in Japan and South Korea. And the 17-year-old promises to be a worthy heir to a tradition which, at right-back at least, has endured some dry times.

The 2001 Brazil Under-20 team produced the awesomely strong Maicon as an attacking right-back. Two years later the No.2 shirt belonged to the sublime Daniel Alves — who all these years later remains the captain of the national team, in part because there has been a dearth of successors. The 2005 U20 right-back was the splendid Rafinha who, incredibly, has only played a couple of friendlies for the senior Brazil side and even flirted with the idea of representing Germany. Since then, though, things have been disappointing — until Yan Couto emerged in magnificent style in the recent U17 World Cup.8

Brazil won the trophy on home soil, but they kept having to dig themselves out of a hole, coming close to defeat in both the semifinal against France and the final against Mexico. More than anyone else, it was Yan Couto who helped them out of trouble. He showed the full four attributes of the attacking full-back: pace down the flank; the lung power to keep running; the technique to hurt the opposing defence with dribbles, passes and crosses; and the decision-making discernment to choose the right option.

It was clear that Yan Couto was not going to spend long in domestic Brazilian football and, after interest from Barcelona, he has now been confirmed as a Manchester City player. City manager Pep Guardiola knows a thing or two about attacking full-backs, having shaped Dani Alves at Barcelona, though the youngster will have to wait until June to make the move across the Atlantic.

More waiting may be necessary. It will take a while before he makes it into first-team contention — after all, he has only played two games at senior level for Coritiba — but he is a piece of lucrative business for the club. The fee is a reported €6 million, which could double in add-ons if he lives up to expectations. That makes him the most expensive player Coritiba have ever sold — curiously taking over from Rafinha, who joined Schalke in Germany for €5m back in 2005.nike cheap nfl jerseys

A decade and a half later, Rafinha is still going strong in Flamengo’s all-conquering team; Yan Couto has the potential to enjoy a career every bit as successful. And, without a lot of competition on the horizon, he will be dreaming of a long stint in the national side in addition to making his name in the Premier League.

Indians’ Carlos Carrasco feeling ‘really strong,’ ready for new start

In the midst of the spring training grind, the Angels-Indians game Tuesday provided an inspirational moment.

Carlos Carrasco made his first start for Cleveland since last May — before he was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia. He missed three months while undergoing treatment, but made good on his promise to return before the end of last season and pitched 15 innings in relief in September.cheap nike nfl jerseys wholesale

“It was emotional, just getting to this point. I feel happy,” Carrasco said after pitching two innings in Arizona. “I think everything’s come out pretty good, I’m really excited to start again.”

He wasn’t the only one who was happy about it.7

“Awesome. Special,” said Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor. “It’s a blessing to have him on the field.”

“He’s been pitching for a long time and he knows what he needs to do to get ready,” said Sandy Leon, who caught him Tuesday.

Carrasco, 32, allowed three hits and two runs against a Los Angeles lineup highlighted by Mike Trout, but Carrasco threw mostly strikes and used all of his pitches. His Cactus League debut was delayed a few days due to a strained right hip flexor, but he reported no difficulties with that Tuesday.nike nfl jerseys cheap paypal

“I actually thought he was pretty good,” manager Terry Francona said.

Carrasco finished 2019 on a high note by just being able to pitch again. But his 6-7 record and 5.29 ERA, mostly before being sidelined, reflected the fatigue he felt before his diagnosis.

That’s far in the past, especially after going out on the mound again.

“I feel great. Really strong. That’s what I’m looking forward to the rest of the season,” Carrasco said.

Francona said before the game that Carrasco looks normal to him. “The hope would be that we could treat him like Carlos Carrasco and not have to worry about other things, that’s the goal. His goal and our goal,” he said.

In his return last year, Carrasco was greeted with a standing ovation, from fans and players alike, in a road game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

How will the Broncos handle Joe Flacco with Drew Lock as starter?

Drew Lock will be the Denver Broncos’ starting quarterback in the 2020 season.

Or, as Broncos chief football decision maker John Elway put it earlier this week, it would be “unrealistic” to say Lock is not the starter next season.

But beyond that, the Broncos’ quarterback depth chart is little more than financial questions and future decisions, starting with Joe Flacco. Consider how Elway started his answer Monday about whether Lock would be the team’s starter after going 4-1 to close out the season.cheap nike nfl jerseys china

Elway then quickly followed with: “Obviously, he finished, did a heck of a job, won four out of five games and played well, but he still has a long way to go — he’s got a lot of work to do. But we’re excited about where Drew is, so, we don’t like to show our hand, but it’s unrealistic to say we’re going a different direction.”8

The 2020 Broncos will have Lock as the projected starter and Flacco as the only other quarterback under contract who has started an NFL game. Flacco’s playing future is uncertain because of a herniated disc in his neck and he’s facing the possibility of surgery. The Broncos did sign Brett Rypien, who spent his rookie season on the team’s practice squad, to a futures contract Tuesday.

The Broncos will have to consider free agency as well as the draft as they determine Flacco’s health. Flacco has two years remaining on his contract that carries a whopping $23.65 million salary-cap figure for the 2020 season and $27.65 million for 2021.

The Broncos won’t entertain paying anything near that galaxy for their No. 2 quarterback, but teams can’t release an injured player without a financial settlement. In short, the two sides are talking about Flacco’s future and his contract no matter what — even as Flacco tries to determine if he can even return to the playing field.

Flacco was quick to say this week that if he were healthy and cleared to play, he would “love” to be back with the Broncos.new nike nfl jerseys cheap

“Of course,” Flacco said. “… I’ll actually look into those things, think about those things when I have to. For now, I’m just focused on working out, getting as healthy as I can.”

Flacco, who went to injured reserve Nov. 1, is scheduled to have an MRI on his neck “around the Super Bowl,” and he said at that point a decision would be made as to whether he will, or won’t, need surgery.

Lakers forward Kyle Kuzma out with sprained ankle

Los Angeles Lakers forward Kyle Kuzma missed Wednesday night’s 96-87 win against the Orlando Magic because of a sprained left ankle.

The three-year veteran injured his ankle nearly two weeks ago against the Washington Wizards but had continued to play on it through soreness and discomfort, the team said.

The Lakers’ medical staff stepped in to hold him out against the Magic as the Lakers begin a five-game road trip, hoping the ankle can heal fully before Kuzma plays more games. His status is considered day-to-day.cheap nfl nike jerseys china

It’s been a difficult season thus far for Kuzma, dubbed the third member of the Lakers’ big three alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis, after the team was able to hold on to him during negotiations for its blockbuster deal with New Orleans in the offseason.7

A string of injuries, starting with a stress reaction in his left ankle suffered during USA Basketball training camp in the summertime — the same ankle that is currently injured — has slowed the 24-year-old’s progress as a young star on the rise.

Through 20 games, Kuzma is averaging 11.1 points on 43.3% shooting while playing 23.1 minutes per night. Last season he averaged 18.7 points on 45.6% shooting while playing a bigger role on a lesser team, logging 33.1 minutes per game.cheap nike nfl jerseys wholesale

Kuzma has repeatedly spoken to the media in recent weeks about his patience being tested this season. A team source told ESPN that he has experienced more upheaval in his role than the team anticipated; Davis is playing fewer minutes at the 5 because JaVale McGee and Dwight Howard have filled that role so well. When Davis plays the 4, it pushes Kuzma out of the ideal stretch role he provides (he has lifted his 3-point percentage from 30.3% a year ago to 36% this season) and challenges him to make the most of playing out of position.
