Nationals’ spring facility latest sports venue to be repurposed in response to pandemic

Sports venues are an emerging asset in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. From staging grounds to drive-thru testing facilities to makeshift hospitals, the once-empty stadiums have become a bustle of activity again.

The Washington Nationals’ spring facility in West Palm Beach, Florida, is the latest to be turned into a testing area. For now, there will be medical personnel in the parking lots instead of players.

“Our [spring] complex is being used as a coronavirus testing site until further notice,” Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said Monday. “So we’re going to shut it down to all players and staff completely while the county and National Guard use it for testing.”

“The news of probably the week is that we’ve totally closed the facility here in West Palm Beach,” Rizzo said.cheap nike nfl jerseys wholesale

Scenarios like the one there are playing out all over the country.8

Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, FedEx Field in Washington and Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, are just a few of the others that have been turned into testing centers. The US Army Corp of Engineers, along with FEMA, have agreed to deploy a military field hospital at Seattle’s CenturyLink Field Event Center, and a soccer field in Seattle is building its own makeshift hospital as well.

The United Center in Chicago became a staging area last week.

“As Illinois goes through this together, the United Center, home of the Chicago Bulls and Chicago Blackhawks, is proud to be playing a critical role with our city, state and federal response to the pandemic,” the Center said in a statement. “Our arena and outside campus will be transformed into a logistics hub where we will be assisting front-line food distribution, first-responder staging and the collection of critically needed medical supplies.”

Stadium personnel say their wish is that their venues remain mostly testing centers and not makeshift hospitals — or even morgues; those scenarios would mean the situation across the country had become much worse. For now, and for the foreseeable future, sports stadiums have a new purpose, with team owners pitching in wherever they’re able.cheap nfl jerseys china nike

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ TIAA Bank Field has been operating as a drive-thru coronavirus testing site since March 21.

“The Jaguars … are glad to do everything we can to assist the federal government and local health care workers in offering a testing site outside of TIAA Bank Field,” Jaguars senior VP of communications Dan Edwards said. “Right now, there’s no better use for this venue than caring for the people of Northeast Florida.”

It’s a sentiment being echoed from coast to coast, while more facilities are folded into the fight against the coronavirus.

The inside story of the first MLB player traded during the coronavirus pandemic

With everything happening in the world, with Major League Baseball shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic, with his minor league income suddenly up in the air, Pereda couldn’t believe he’d just been traded from the Chicago Cubs. As he sat in his Mesa, Arizona, hotel room holding his infant daughter, Carlotta, Pereda received a second call from Boston Red Sox assistant general manager Eddie Romero, confirming the news he’d just gotten from the Cubs.cheap nfl nike jerseys china

That’s when his new reality set in.

“I was just hoping and looking forward to the beginning of the season and to start making money,” Pereda, a 23-year-old from Aragua, Venezuela, told ESPN through a translator. “I have to give support to my family. When I found out that the season was over, my first thought was, ‘What am I going to do?'”7

Boston acquired Pereda from the Cubs last Monday, completing a trade finalized in January that sent righty Travis Lakins to Chicago — making Pereda the first player traded during the worldwide pandemic. When MLB decided last week to freeze rosters due to the suspension of the season, Pereda was joined by Rays minor league infielder Esteban Quiroz as the only players traded.

The terms of the Lakins trade required a player to be named later to be agreed upon by March 24. Last season, Pereda won the Gold Glove at the catcher position for all of minor league baseball, throwing out 50% of runners. Left unprotected by the Cubs in the Rule 5 draft, Pereda re-signed with the organization on a minor league deal this offseason before being dealt to Boston.

“We had to complete the trade by the 24th,” said Red Sox general manager Brian O’Halloran. “Nobody was sure how things were going to go with the negotiations when the potential transaction freeze might take place. We were sort of resigned to the fact that it was unusual, but we were going to acquire a player that we couldn’t see in person and that we couldn’t have report to Fort Myers [Florida] and we just had to treat him as best as we possibly could.”

His world now flipped upside down, Pereda’s mind raced. What should he do next? He wondered if he needed to fly to Fort Myers to join the other minor leaguers in the Red Sox organization. Like many players from Latin America, Pereda thought too about his family back home, who depend on his baseball salary.cheap nike nfl jerseys wholesale

“Coming from a third-world country where everything is very hard and tough, with the entire situation, I just wish that MLB and other people can help the minor leaguers [more] than they are doing right now because we need that money to live and provide for our families,” Pereda said. “I think I can speak for all the Latin-American players, coming from there to the States, when we arrive to this country, it is because we are going to work and we are trying to make money to provide for our families.

“Of course being in the big leagues, you have all of the attention of the fans and people sometimes don’t realize how hard the struggle we have to go through. Only the players know how hard it is to get there because being in the business, you have to go to the minors first.”

No symptoms for Lakers after 2-week quarantine

Two weeks after two unnamed Los Angeles Lakers players tested positive for COVID-19, the team announced Tuesday that all of its players are currently symptom-free.nfl nike jerseys for cheap

After the Brooklyn Nets revealed that four of their players, including Kevin Durant, tested positive for the virus, the Lakers quickly arranged for their players to be tested because their last game was against the Nets on March 10 at Staples Center.

The NBA suspended its season indefinitely the following day.

The Lakers had to wait two days for test results, and then all of their players were placed in a 14-day home isolation prescribed by the team. Fourteen players out of the Lakers’ 17-man roster (including two-way contracts) were tested at the time, league sources told ESPN.8
The Lakers never had to leave their vehicles once arriving at the test site for the procedure, which involved a cotton swab being placed up players’ nostrils to secure a culture.

“The thing I think people aren’t realizing is how serious of an ordeal this is and that it’s not to be taken lightly,” Lakers guard Alex Caruso told ESPN last week when asked about the team’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. “Everybody said the test is uncomfortable, and it pretty much was. They just stuck a Q-tip through your nose to the back of your mouth.”nike nfl cheap jerseys

The Lakers have currently missed 10 games since the NBA went on hiatus — which will reach three weeks on Wednesday.

Lakers superstar LeBron James on Monday resumed exercising with the assistance of longtime athletic trainer Mike Mancias at his L.A. home.

James appeared as a guest on the “Road Trippin'” podcast last week and proposed a truncated finale to the regular season — five to 10 games — if and when play resumes, followed by the postseason.

“One thing you can’t just do is go straight to the playoffs,” James said. “Because it discredits the 60-plus games that guys had fighting for that position.”

There have been more than 160,000 reported cases of the coronavirus in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website, causing more than 2,800 deaths.

Heat’s Goran Dragic says he’s not going to Slovenia during layoff

Goran Dragic of the Miami Heat said Tuesday that he is prepared to forgo his annual offseason move back to his native Slovenia if that is what the NBA schedule necessitates.

Dragic, his wife and their two children are in Miami and have no plans to leave for Slovenia amid the global coronavirus pandemic. His parents recently left Miami to return home, but the Heat guard says he’s staying.cheap nike nfl jerseys from china

“Three days ago they flew back home because they had to — the government said that all the Slovenian citizens needed to get back,” Dragic said, referring to his parents, adding that they wore masks and gloves on their not-very-full flight back to Slovenia. “But my situation is different. Here is my home. We have health insurance in America and we have a home to go to, so we’re going to stay here.”

Dragic and his family have gotten a firsthand global view of the pandemic.7

He’s in Miami, and so is his uncle — who is staying in the U.S. because he cannot get back to his native Serbia; Dragic said that country has essentially locked its borders over health concerns. Dragic’s brother Zoran, a former Heat guard, was quarantined while playing in Spain, then returned to Slovenia recently and is under quarantine again, unable to leave his hotel room for a couple of more weeks.

“It’s a really crazy situation over there,” Dragic said, detailing what his brother went through in Spain — one of the hardest-hit nations, with more than 94,000 confirmed cases of the virus and more than 8,000 deaths attributed to the virus, the second-highest total worldwide behind only Italy. Slovenia has confirmed 802 cases through Tuesday, with 15 deaths.nfl nike jerseys for cheap

In Miami, though, Dragic is trying to keep some sense of normalcy.

Dragic said the Heat are participating in a daily team workout on Zoom most mornings, those sessions often including strength and conditioning coach Eric Foran and Heat assistant coach Chris Quinn, among others.

“We try to work together, in isolation,” Dragic said.

Dragic has also been working out individually at his waterfront home, trying to stay fit. He’s hopeful that the season resumes at some point and said he hopes the league has teams play no more than a handful of games before starting the playoffs.

“I’m running around the house. I’m going to be in good shape,” Dragic said.

Dragic is averaging 16.1 points and 5.1 assists this season for the Heat, coming off the bench in all but one of his 54 games.

Source: Redskins get former Eagles corner Ronald Darby

The Washington Redskins, who have already unloaded their top two corners from last season, turned to a division rival to help fill a void, signing veteran Ronald Darby, a source told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Darby signed a one-year deal worth $4 million.nike nfl jerseys cheap china

The Redskins cut Josh Norman before free agency and traded corner Quinton Dunbar. Darby won’t automatically replace one of them in the starting lineup, but he does provide an intriguing option. The Redskins also signed Kendall Fuller in free agency. They also have veteran Fabian Moreau and second-year Jimmy Moreland among others who can compete for starting jobs or key roles.

Darby, 26, was arguably the Eagles’ most gifted cornerback during his three years in Philadelphia, which included a Super Bowl run in 2017, but injuries kept him from being a consistent force.8

He missed 28 of a possible 48 games over the past three seasons, including eight games in 2018 after tearing an ACL. He returned for the start of this past season but was in and out of the lineup and finished with two interceptions and 11 passes defensed over 11 games.cheap nfl nike jersey

A second-round pick of the Buffalo Bills in 2015, Darby started 29 of 32 games during his two years with the Bills. With 21 passes defensed and a pair of interceptions, he finished second in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting behind Marcus Peters.

Darby was traded to Philadelphia before the start of the 2017 season for receiver Jordan Matthews and a third-round pick.

Todd McShay’s mock draft fits Cowboys’ needs, but is the order right?

With what the Dallas Cowboys have and have not done in free agency, the direction they need to take in the upcoming draft is becoming clear.

In his two-round mock draft, ESPN Insider Todd McShay read the tea leaves as well, selecting Florida cornerback CJ Henderson for Dallas in the first round at No. 17 overall and Michigan defensive end Josh Uche at No. 51 overall.cheap nfl nike jersey

The Cowboys lost Byron Jones to the Miami Dolphins, kept Anthony Brown and C.J. Goodwin, and added Maurice Canady to a group led by Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis. Henderson is considered the second-best cornerback in the draft behind Ohio State’s Jeff Okudah, so grabbing him in the first round makes sense. Henderson is fast. He has good size. He has made some plays on the ball.

I always like to check who was selected later in these mock drafts and see if there are better fits. At Nos. 18 and 19 went safeties Xavier McKinney and Antoine Winfield Jr. to the Dolphins and Las Vegas Raiders, respectively. Safety remains a Dallas need even with the addition of Ha Ha Clinton-Dix on a one-year deal.7

Then at No. 27 went LSU pass-rusher K’Lavon Chaisson. McShay called him the second-best edge rusher in the draft behind Ohio State’s Chase Young. Chaisson, a season removed from a serious knee injury, had 6.5 sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss for the national champions.

Now think about what the Cowboys have and have not done in free agency with pass-rushers. Robert Quinn and his team-best 11.5 sacks left for Chicago. Dallas has added interior players Gerald McCoy and Dontari Poe, but has a hole at right defensive end opposite DeMarcus Lawrence. Tyrone Crawford is a solid, versatile player whom the Cowboys should keep, but he is coming off surgeries to both hips. Randy Gregory might be reinstated and his return would help.nike nfl jerseys cheap china

This isn’t to say Uche would be a bad pick.

He had 8.5 sacks last season, but when people see “Michigan” they will think Taco Charlton, which is an unfair label. Uche has the speed to capture the edge and seems to have a feel for getting to the quarterback, but he needs to add strength.

With the Cowboys picking at No. 51, McShay had cornerbacks Jaylon Johnson (No. 53, Philadelphia), Jeff Gladney (No. 57, Houston) and Noah Igbinoghene (No. 63, Kansas City) available in the second round.

Would you feel better about a Henderson-Uche pairing or, say, a Chaisson-Gladney pairing?

Harry Kane won’t stay at Tottenham ‘just for the sake of it’

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane said on Sunday that he could leave the Premier League club if the team does not progress in the right direction as he wants to win trophies “sooner rather than later.”

Kane has scored 181 goals for Spurs in all competitions — averaging 30 goals a season since his breakthrough into the starting lineup in 2014 — but he is yet to win a trophy with the London club.

The England striker signed a six-year contract extension in 2018 that would keep him at Spurs until 2024 but admitted in an Instagram Q&A with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp that he could not guarantee he would stay if the club was not successful.

“I’ll always love Spurs, but it’s one of them things. I’ve always said if I don’t feel like we’re progressing as a team or going in the right direction, I’m not someone to stay there just for the sake of it,” Kane said.nfl nike jerseys for cheap

“I’m an ambitious player, I want to improve and become better. I want to become a top, top player, so it all depends on what happens as a team and how we progress as a team.8

“So, it’s not a definite ‘I’m going to stay there forever’ but it’s not a no either.”

The closest Kane has come to winning a trophy was in the League Cup final in 2015 and the Champions League final last season, with Spurs losing to Chelsea and Liverpool, respectively.

Liverpool deserve Premier League title if season cancelled – Ilkay Gundogan

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan says it would only be “fair” for rivals Liverpool to be awarded the Premier League trophy if the season cannot be completed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Gundogan told German broadcaster ZDF that Liverpool deserved to be crowned champions given their massive 25-point lead over second-placed City, the current holders, which has left them just two wins away from the title.cheap nike nfl jerseys free shipping

“For me, that would be OK, yes,” Gundogan said, after being asked whether Liverpool should be handed their first top-flight title for 30 years should the season not be completed.7

“You have to be fair as a sportsperson,” he added, while conceding that it was a difficult decision for football authorities given the impact that the cancellation of the season would have at both ends of the table.

“There are different opinions. For clubs who have had a very good season, it obviously wouldn’t be nice if it was cancelled now,” he said.

The Premier League season has been suspended until April 30, but it is looking increasingly likely that the date may have to be pushed back further.nfl nike jerseys for cheap

Germany international Gundogan also said he would be open to taking a pay cut should English clubs follow the likes of Juventus and Borussia Dortmund in asking their players to accept reduced wages so non-playing staff can be paid.

“Of course I think it’s OK, that goes without saying, [but] there’s been no discussion in England yet,” Gundogan said. “Perhaps that’s because the English clubs are a bit financially stronger than the clubs in Germany at the moment.

“I don’t know who has the final say in that decision. On the other hand, if a player says, ‘no, I don’t want that, I worked hard for it, I get my salary,’ then it can go in the opposite direction.

“For me personally, it would be OK, but, to be honest, you have to be tolerant, and if there are players who are against that, then that’s also an acceptable situation.”

LeBron James says there’s no excitement, crying or joy without fans

Speaking extensively for the first time since the NBA announced it was suspending its season during the coronavirus pandemic, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James outlined some of the challenges facing the league as it hopes to get back to the court.

“So what happens when a guy who is tested positive for corona and you’re out there on the floor with him and it’s a loose ball?” James said as a guest on the Road Trippin’ Podcast hosted by former Cleveland Cavaliers teammates Richard Jefferson and Channing Frye and current Lakers studio host Allie Clifton.

The podcast, presented by James’ multimedia platform Uninterrupted, was released Thursday, the same day James and the Lakers were scheduled to be in Cleveland to play the Cavs. Instead, the NBA’s hiatus ticked past two weeks as there have been 14 reported cases of COVID-19 involving players and personnel — including two Lakers.cheap nfl nike jerseys china

“It’s always special going back there and looking up there and look at that banner,” James said, referring to the 2016 championship banner James, an Akron, Ohio, native who played 11 of his 17 seasons in Cleveland, helped earn. “Think about all the great memories that we had. And then being able to play in front of my friends and family again. That would have been so cool. … I’m kind of bummed out about that.”7

He was also disappointed at the thought of returning to play in a league that, at least temporarily, would likely be forced to play games with no fans in attendance.

“What is the word ‘sport’ without ‘fan’?” James asked. “There’s no excitement. There’s no crying. There’s no joy. There’s no back-and-forth.

“… That’s what also brings out the competitive side of the players to know that you’re going on the road in a hostile environment and yes, you’re playing against that opponent in front of you, but you really want to kick the fans’ ass too.cheap nike nfl jersey

“So to get back on the floor, I would love it. I’m not going to sit here and say nothing. Like, if it’s get out there and get back on the floor 5-on-5 … but like, we can do that in scrimmages. Let’s just go to each other’s practice facility, put out a camera, just scrimmage and livestream it. … I just don’t know how we can imagine a sporting event without fans. It’s just, it’s a weird dynamic.”

James and the hosts also addressed the logistical concerns regarding what it would actually take to turn the lights back on for the league. When Jefferson, who also works as an ESPN NBA analyst, suggested that teams could be isolated in a league-selected hotel for the duration of the postseason as a safety measure, James objected.

Ighalo’s Man United future uncertain amid coronavirus crisis – sources

Odion Ighalo is facing an uncertain future at Manchester United with his loan deal set to expire on May 31, sources have told ESPN.

The striker moved to Old Trafford in a short-term transfer from Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua on the final day of the January window.china nike nfl jerseys cheap

The agreement would have covered United’s campaign until after the Europa League final on May 27, but that has now been thrown into doubt after the Premier League and European club competitions were suspended indefinitely because of the coronavirus crisis.8

As things stand, the Premier League are committed to finishing the season even if it means playing games through the summer and beyond. But unless Ighalo’s loan can be renegotiated, the Nigeria international will have to leave on May 31.

Officially at least, United hold his registration until June 30 when the transfer window is due to re-open in China. However, with no agreement for the player to be at Old Trafford beyond the end of May the deal would need to be renegotiated. United would also need special permission from FIFA to keep the striker beyond July 1, when all loans across Europe’s major leagues expire.

With the UK placed under lockdown by the government on Monday, there is no indication yet about when the season might be able to resume.nike nfl jerseys cheap china

Former Watford striker Ighalo has been a success since arriving at Old Trafford, scoring four goals in just eight appearances.

The boyhood United fan has scored on each of his three starts against Club Brugge, Derby County and LASK Linz.
