Aaron Rodgers applauds Packers’ hiring of sports psychologist

Count quarterback Aaron Rodgers among those who like the Green Bay Packers’ decision to hire Dr. Chris Carr as Director of Performance Psychology and Team Behavioral Health Clinician.

Shortly after the announcement was made on Thursday, Rodgers applauded the move on Twitter with hand-clapping emojis.

It’s not the first time Rodgers has commented on Carr, who has served as a consultant to the Packers since 2018.nike nfl jerseys cheap china

In December, Rodgers brought up Carr’s name unprompted, saying: “We also have a sports psychologist on staff now who’s a great resource. That is finally across all sports becoming a more ‘accepted’ position, maybe? I don’t know if that’s the right word. But there’s less of a stigma, I think, really countrywide about how getting help is not a weakness; it’s actually a sign of strength that you’re able to get help and ask for help and set your pride and ego aside. But I’ve done a lot of research on that stuff.”5

In January, during the Packers’ run to the NFC Championship Game, another player brought up Carr’s name on his own. Cornerback Kevin King mentioned Carr when talking about the mental side of the game.

“Just trying to be consistent with it, just trying to maintain and find that sweet spot to where I like,” King said. “Try to bottle up that feeling of how I felt when I was at that sweet spot. Talking to Dr. Carr, our psychologist, and figure out how to get back to that.”

Carr joins the Packers full time now after working as a sports and performance psychologist at St. Vincent Sports Performance in Indianapolis since 2006. He also served as a consultant to the NBA’s Indiana Pacers.china nike nfl jerseys cheap

Among other teams, the Carolina Panthers also have a full-time, in-house psychologist on staff. A 2018 story on ESPN.com said the Panthers at the time were believed to be the only NFL team that had a full-time staffer in that position.

Carr told ESPN for that story that he was one of five full-time members of a Division I college athletics department in his role when he finished his Ph.D. at Washington State University in the early 1990s.

“Now over 50 to 60 schools have sports psychology and mental health provided in-house for athletes, but it’s really been the last five years where the NCAA has made it a priority,” Carr told ESPN in 2018. “In some ways this is a transitional shift in the culture of sports where we realize these are real issues and you need to have really good, competent providers to take care of those athletes.”

Broncos’ Harris sees positive side of 1-year deal amid pandemic

Maybe, a month ago, defensive end Shelby Harris did believe he would get a multiyear windfall in free agency instead of the one-year deal he signed with the Denver Broncos, but he said Friday that now is not the time to worry about such things.

“At the end of the day, we can go back and forth about, ‘Why this’ and ‘Why that.’ You know, I’m just happy to have a job,” Harris said on a conference call. “There’s millions of Americans right now who have lost their jobs. I rather just focus on the fact that I have a job, more than, you know, if ‘you want to talk about numbers.’

“… We should be happy, should be blessed, that we are able to be employed. That we have a job. It’s bigger than that right now. And I just think the important thing is that I actually have a job and I’m able to provide for my family. There are people who can’t.”

Harris appeared poised for a multiyear deal with another team after finishing the 2019 season with career-bests in tackles (49), sacks (6) and passes defensed (9). However, after not signing with a new team in the opening days of free agency, he accepted a one-year deal with the Broncos that could be worth up to $3.095 million, including incentives.cheap nfl jerseys china nike

That’s slightly less than Harris made last season with the team.6

“I can’t get mad about why things happened, when there are so many people in the world and in America right now who can’t … who don’t even have a job because of the coronavirus,” Harris said.

Harris, who had been waived six times in his first three years in the league before arriving to the Broncos as a “futures” player in 2017, said he hopes the NFL will be able to resume in some fashion this year.nike nfl jerseys cheap china

However, he said there are bigger issues to consider.

“I think that eventually there will be,” Harris said. “I don’t know how much. … Obviously, you want to go back out there and work, but you want to be safe, you want to do your part for the community. They’re doing their part for us — the social distancing — so however long this needs to go, I’m all for it.

“And, you know, it’s about the masses, not just the individual person. … There are people putting their lives, putting their family on the line so we can somehow live. Out of respect for them, we’ve got to do what’s best for the community and not try to rush anything.”

The inside story of the first MLB player traded during the coronavirus pandemic

With everything happening in the world, with Major League Baseball shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic, with his minor league income suddenly up in the air, Pereda couldn’t believe he’d just been traded from the Chicago Cubs. As he sat in his Mesa, Arizona, hotel room holding his infant daughter, Carlotta, Pereda received a second call from Boston Red Sox assistant general manager Eddie Romero, confirming the news he’d just gotten from the Cubs.cheap nfl nike jerseys china

That’s when his new reality set in.

“I was just hoping and looking forward to the beginning of the season and to start making money,” Pereda, a 23-year-old from Aragua, Venezuela, told ESPN through a translator. “I have to give support to my family. When I found out that the season was over, my first thought was, ‘What am I going to do?'”7

Boston acquired Pereda from the Cubs last Monday, completing a trade finalized in January that sent righty Travis Lakins to Chicago — making Pereda the first player traded during the worldwide pandemic. When MLB decided last week to freeze rosters due to the suspension of the season, Pereda was joined by Rays minor league infielder Esteban Quiroz as the only players traded.

The terms of the Lakins trade required a player to be named later to be agreed upon by March 24. Last season, Pereda won the Gold Glove at the catcher position for all of minor league baseball, throwing out 50% of runners. Left unprotected by the Cubs in the Rule 5 draft, Pereda re-signed with the organization on a minor league deal this offseason before being dealt to Boston.

“We had to complete the trade by the 24th,” said Red Sox general manager Brian O’Halloran. “Nobody was sure how things were going to go with the negotiations when the potential transaction freeze might take place. We were sort of resigned to the fact that it was unusual, but we were going to acquire a player that we couldn’t see in person and that we couldn’t have report to Fort Myers [Florida] and we just had to treat him as best as we possibly could.”

His world now flipped upside down, Pereda’s mind raced. What should he do next? He wondered if he needed to fly to Fort Myers to join the other minor leaguers in the Red Sox organization. Like many players from Latin America, Pereda thought too about his family back home, who depend on his baseball salary.cheap nike nfl jerseys wholesale

“Coming from a third-world country where everything is very hard and tough, with the entire situation, I just wish that MLB and other people can help the minor leaguers [more] than they are doing right now because we need that money to live and provide for our families,” Pereda said. “I think I can speak for all the Latin-American players, coming from there to the States, when we arrive to this country, it is because we are going to work and we are trying to make money to provide for our families.

“Of course being in the big leagues, you have all of the attention of the fans and people sometimes don’t realize how hard the struggle we have to go through. Only the players know how hard it is to get there because being in the business, you have to go to the minors first.”

No symptoms for Lakers after 2-week quarantine

Two weeks after two unnamed Los Angeles Lakers players tested positive for COVID-19, the team announced Tuesday that all of its players are currently symptom-free.nfl nike jerseys for cheap

After the Brooklyn Nets revealed that four of their players, including Kevin Durant, tested positive for the virus, the Lakers quickly arranged for their players to be tested because their last game was against the Nets on March 10 at Staples Center.

The NBA suspended its season indefinitely the following day.

The Lakers had to wait two days for test results, and then all of their players were placed in a 14-day home isolation prescribed by the team. Fourteen players out of the Lakers’ 17-man roster (including two-way contracts) were tested at the time, league sources told ESPN.8
The Lakers never had to leave their vehicles once arriving at the test site for the procedure, which involved a cotton swab being placed up players’ nostrils to secure a culture.

“The thing I think people aren’t realizing is how serious of an ordeal this is and that it’s not to be taken lightly,” Lakers guard Alex Caruso told ESPN last week when asked about the team’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. “Everybody said the test is uncomfortable, and it pretty much was. They just stuck a Q-tip through your nose to the back of your mouth.”nike nfl cheap jerseys

The Lakers have currently missed 10 games since the NBA went on hiatus — which will reach three weeks on Wednesday.

Lakers superstar LeBron James on Monday resumed exercising with the assistance of longtime athletic trainer Mike Mancias at his L.A. home.

James appeared as a guest on the “Road Trippin'” podcast last week and proposed a truncated finale to the regular season — five to 10 games — if and when play resumes, followed by the postseason.

“One thing you can’t just do is go straight to the playoffs,” James said. “Because it discredits the 60-plus games that guys had fighting for that position.”

There have been more than 160,000 reported cases of the coronavirus in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website, causing more than 2,800 deaths.

Source: Redskins get former Eagles corner Ronald Darby

The Washington Redskins, who have already unloaded their top two corners from last season, turned to a division rival to help fill a void, signing veteran Ronald Darby, a source told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Darby signed a one-year deal worth $4 million.nike nfl jerseys cheap china

The Redskins cut Josh Norman before free agency and traded corner Quinton Dunbar. Darby won’t automatically replace one of them in the starting lineup, but he does provide an intriguing option. The Redskins also signed Kendall Fuller in free agency. They also have veteran Fabian Moreau and second-year Jimmy Moreland among others who can compete for starting jobs or key roles.

Darby, 26, was arguably the Eagles’ most gifted cornerback during his three years in Philadelphia, which included a Super Bowl run in 2017, but injuries kept him from being a consistent force.8

He missed 28 of a possible 48 games over the past three seasons, including eight games in 2018 after tearing an ACL. He returned for the start of this past season but was in and out of the lineup and finished with two interceptions and 11 passes defensed over 11 games.cheap nfl nike jersey

A second-round pick of the Buffalo Bills in 2015, Darby started 29 of 32 games during his two years with the Bills. With 21 passes defensed and a pair of interceptions, he finished second in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting behind Marcus Peters.

Darby was traded to Philadelphia before the start of the 2017 season for receiver Jordan Matthews and a third-round pick.

Todd McShay’s mock draft fits Cowboys’ needs, but is the order right?

With what the Dallas Cowboys have and have not done in free agency, the direction they need to take in the upcoming draft is becoming clear.

In his two-round mock draft, ESPN Insider Todd McShay read the tea leaves as well, selecting Florida cornerback CJ Henderson for Dallas in the first round at No. 17 overall and Michigan defensive end Josh Uche at No. 51 overall.cheap nfl nike jersey

The Cowboys lost Byron Jones to the Miami Dolphins, kept Anthony Brown and C.J. Goodwin, and added Maurice Canady to a group led by Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis. Henderson is considered the second-best cornerback in the draft behind Ohio State’s Jeff Okudah, so grabbing him in the first round makes sense. Henderson is fast. He has good size. He has made some plays on the ball.

I always like to check who was selected later in these mock drafts and see if there are better fits. At Nos. 18 and 19 went safeties Xavier McKinney and Antoine Winfield Jr. to the Dolphins and Las Vegas Raiders, respectively. Safety remains a Dallas need even with the addition of Ha Ha Clinton-Dix on a one-year deal.7

Then at No. 27 went LSU pass-rusher K’Lavon Chaisson. McShay called him the second-best edge rusher in the draft behind Ohio State’s Chase Young. Chaisson, a season removed from a serious knee injury, had 6.5 sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss for the national champions.

Now think about what the Cowboys have and have not done in free agency with pass-rushers. Robert Quinn and his team-best 11.5 sacks left for Chicago. Dallas has added interior players Gerald McCoy and Dontari Poe, but has a hole at right defensive end opposite DeMarcus Lawrence. Tyrone Crawford is a solid, versatile player whom the Cowboys should keep, but he is coming off surgeries to both hips. Randy Gregory might be reinstated and his return would help.nike nfl jerseys cheap china

This isn’t to say Uche would be a bad pick.

He had 8.5 sacks last season, but when people see “Michigan” they will think Taco Charlton, which is an unfair label. Uche has the speed to capture the edge and seems to have a feel for getting to the quarterback, but he needs to add strength.

With the Cowboys picking at No. 51, McShay had cornerbacks Jaylon Johnson (No. 53, Philadelphia), Jeff Gladney (No. 57, Houston) and Noah Igbinoghene (No. 63, Kansas City) available in the second round.

Would you feel better about a Henderson-Uche pairing or, say, a Chaisson-Gladney pairing?

Harry Kane won’t stay at Tottenham ‘just for the sake of it’

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane said on Sunday that he could leave the Premier League club if the team does not progress in the right direction as he wants to win trophies “sooner rather than later.”

Kane has scored 181 goals for Spurs in all competitions — averaging 30 goals a season since his breakthrough into the starting lineup in 2014 — but he is yet to win a trophy with the London club.

The England striker signed a six-year contract extension in 2018 that would keep him at Spurs until 2024 but admitted in an Instagram Q&A with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp that he could not guarantee he would stay if the club was not successful.

“I’ll always love Spurs, but it’s one of them things. I’ve always said if I don’t feel like we’re progressing as a team or going in the right direction, I’m not someone to stay there just for the sake of it,” Kane said.nfl nike jerseys for cheap

“I’m an ambitious player, I want to improve and become better. I want to become a top, top player, so it all depends on what happens as a team and how we progress as a team.8

“So, it’s not a definite ‘I’m going to stay there forever’ but it’s not a no either.”

The closest Kane has come to winning a trophy was in the League Cup final in 2015 and the Champions League final last season, with Spurs losing to Chelsea and Liverpool, respectively.

LeBron James says there’s no excitement, crying or joy without fans

Speaking extensively for the first time since the NBA announced it was suspending its season during the coronavirus pandemic, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James outlined some of the challenges facing the league as it hopes to get back to the court.

“So what happens when a guy who is tested positive for corona and you’re out there on the floor with him and it’s a loose ball?” James said as a guest on the Road Trippin’ Podcast hosted by former Cleveland Cavaliers teammates Richard Jefferson and Channing Frye and current Lakers studio host Allie Clifton.

The podcast, presented by James’ multimedia platform Uninterrupted, was released Thursday, the same day James and the Lakers were scheduled to be in Cleveland to play the Cavs. Instead, the NBA’s hiatus ticked past two weeks as there have been 14 reported cases of COVID-19 involving players and personnel — including two Lakers.cheap nfl nike jerseys china

“It’s always special going back there and looking up there and look at that banner,” James said, referring to the 2016 championship banner James, an Akron, Ohio, native who played 11 of his 17 seasons in Cleveland, helped earn. “Think about all the great memories that we had. And then being able to play in front of my friends and family again. That would have been so cool. … I’m kind of bummed out about that.”7

He was also disappointed at the thought of returning to play in a league that, at least temporarily, would likely be forced to play games with no fans in attendance.

“What is the word ‘sport’ without ‘fan’?” James asked. “There’s no excitement. There’s no crying. There’s no joy. There’s no back-and-forth.

“… That’s what also brings out the competitive side of the players to know that you’re going on the road in a hostile environment and yes, you’re playing against that opponent in front of you, but you really want to kick the fans’ ass too.cheap nike nfl jersey

“So to get back on the floor, I would love it. I’m not going to sit here and say nothing. Like, if it’s get out there and get back on the floor 5-on-5 … but like, we can do that in scrimmages. Let’s just go to each other’s practice facility, put out a camera, just scrimmage and livestream it. … I just don’t know how we can imagine a sporting event without fans. It’s just, it’s a weird dynamic.”

James and the hosts also addressed the logistical concerns regarding what it would actually take to turn the lights back on for the league. When Jefferson, who also works as an ESPN NBA analyst, suggested that teams could be isolated in a league-selected hotel for the duration of the postseason as a safety measure, James objected.

Packers’ Aaron Rodgers details frenzied departure from Peru

Aaron Rodgers and his travel party that included three other people got out of Peru nine days ago, within minutes of the airport closing due to the coronavirus outbreak, the Green Bay Packers quarterback revealed Friday on a radio show.

Rodgers told Pat McAfee and former Packers teammate A.J. Hawk, who co-hosted the show, that it was “quite the ordeal.”cheap new nike nfl jerseys

“Have you seen the movie ‘Argo’?” Rodgers asked. “The scene at the end where they’re racing to the airport. Nobody was chasing us, thankfully, or holding us. We didn’t have to speak Farsi to get back into the country, but there were some moments where we worried we were not going to get out. It was absolute pandemonium at the airport.”7

Rodgers returned to his home in Malibu, California, and has followed stay-at-home guidelines along with girlfriend Danica Patrick. He said that of the four people on the trip, none had any symptoms at the time or in the days since.nike jersey nfl cheap

He said he had planned other parts of his trip to South America, but they cut it short. The group flew via private plane, which Rodgers said helped them get out of the country quickly. Had they flown commercial, he said, he does not think they would have gotten out when they did.

“Probably not, not right away,” Rodgers said. “I know there’s been some planes and some folks who were down there who’ve gotten brought back [since then]. … When we rolled up to the airport at, like, 7 in the morning, it was wall-to-wall people, and you couldn’t move. I was thinking, ‘This isn’t very safe.’ Not many masks on, and there was definitely a panic in the air. But somehow [we] made it down, and then they shut the airport down because it was really bad weather. They had a drop-dead time where they were going to shut the entire airport down. We made it by about 15 minutes.”

Rodgers said his group was in remote areas near Cusco, Peru, where there are not any reported cases of the coronavirus.

TE Jimmy Graham responds to critics of Bears’ move: ‘I’m still fast’

The Bears’ decision to sign veteran tight end Jimmy Graham to a two-year contract that included $9 million guaranteed and a no-trade clause — on the heels of him being released by division rival Green Bay — was arguably the most universally panned move in free agency, but Graham insisted on Thursday that he still can perform at an elite level.cheap wholesale nike nfl jerseys

“I’m still fast. … I still have the ability to make big plays,” Graham said during a conference call with Chicago media.

A third-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in the 2010 NFL draft, Graham quickly emerged as the game’s most feared pass-catching tight end, earning a trip to the Pro Bowl in just his second season (2011) with 99 receptions, 1,310 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. Graham, 33, would eventually be named to five Pro Bowls over stints with New Orleans (2010-14) and Seattle (2015-17) before agreeing a free-agent deal with Green Bay in 2018.
Green Bay released Graham on March 12.6

“Obviously, it was a tough pill to swallow,” Graham said. “It was the first time I lost my job. And I work extremely hard. I’ve sacrificed everything for this game. I’ve given it everything I have, and obviously to go through that, it was difficult. Now I have the opportunity to win a bunch of games this year and I’m very grateful for that, and I’m obviously grateful for the opportunity and the friendships I did make just up north there. But for me, it’s lit a fire.

“I know what player I am and I know what I can do. I think I was able to show a little bit of that in the playoffs with some of the opportunities I was given. And after being 10 years in, I’ve only missed six games. That’s coming off of, at times, all kinds of injuries … at times I’ve kind of been on ice the last two years, so my knee right now is the best it’s felt in four or five years. This is the best that I’ve ran, this is the fastest I’ve been in the last four or five years. I’m going to get back to being me. I’m going to get back to making big plays and scoring touchdowns because I think I’m somewhere in the top of scoring touchdowns and I want to continue that. I want to continue climbing that list and get to where I’m supposed to be.”

Chicago had the NFL’s least productive group of tight ends in 2019. The Bears did not have a tight end reach 100 receiving yards — J.P. Holtz led the team with 91 — or 15 receptions as Chicago, overall, ranked near the bottom in total offense, points scored, rushing offense and passing offense.cheap new nike nfl jerseys

Graham joins a tight end room that includes often-injured Trey Burton (guaranteed $6.7 million in 2020), 2017 second-round pick Adam Shaheen (26 career catches for 249 yards), Ben Braunecker and veteran Demetrius Harris, whom Chicago added in February.

The Bears are also in the midst of a quarterback competition. Chicago traded a fourth-round compensatory draft pick to Jacksonville for veteran quarterback Nick Foles, who is expected to challenge 2017 second overall pick Mitchell Trubisky for the starting job.
