Sources: Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis, eyeing bigger deal, declines option

Fresh off a championship in his first season as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, All-Star big man Anthony Davis has declined to pick up the final year on his contract and will enter free agency this week, league sources confirmed to ESPN on Sunday.

Davis, 27, averaged 27.7 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.4 blocks per game in the postseason during the Lakers’ title run.

The fact that Davis is not picking up the final year on his deal, worth $28.7 million, is viewed merely as a business decision to ink a longer deal with more security than one season guaranteed. It also will allow him to reenter free agency as a 10-year veteran, when his maximum salary potential will increase.nfl cheap nike jerseys

Yahoo Sports was first to report Davis’ contract decision.8

The Lakers, sources said, will present several options to Davis and his agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, in order to work with the superstar on the deal that makes him feel the most comfortable being part of the franchise moving forward.

One factor that Davis surely will measure when considering his options is the contract status of LeBron James, who is under contract for 2020-21 and has a player option for 2021-22.

Davis is one of a handful of L.A.’s championship pieces who could test free agency this week. Guards Rajon Rondo, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Avery Bradley also have player options available that they are expected to decline.nike nfl cheap jerseys

JaVale McGee also has a player option worth $4.2 million that he could pick up, considering the market for traditional big men and his fit playing with Davis. Dwight Howard and Markieff Morris are set to become unrestricted free agents.

USMNT’s Steffen: I’m growing at Manchester City despite limited play

United States men’s national team goalkeeper Zack Steffen feels he’s already grown on the field with club side Manchester City, even though he’s only been with the first team for a little over two months.

Steffen, 25, signed with Man City back in July of 2019, but spent the 2019-20 season on loan with German side Fortuna Dusseldorf. Steffen was brought in this season primarily to back up Ederson, but he has backstopped the club to two wins in the EFL Cup.

“Their goalie coach is really detailed, and is very eager to make me a better goalkeeper,” Steffen told reporters ahead of Thursday’s friendly against Wales. “And then just working with those guys day in and day out, the training, the level of intensity and skill and talent and everything that goes into it, I feel myself growing.”

In terms of what areas have been sharpened, Steffen pointed to the technical side of his game.china nike nfl jerseys cheap

“It’s just so much more detailed than anything I’ve ever really been a part of, whether that’s hand positioning when you’re just catching the ball, or it’s a set position on a certain shot, or one-v-one.7

“There’s so many little aspects that I obviously knew of and I know the techniques, but I feel like I never really got the reasons why you do that. And so, I feel like I’m learning some new techniques obviously but [also] some reasons of why these techniques are gonna help me in the long run.”

Steffen’s brief spell with City has now allowed him to see manager Pep Guardiola up close. He said while he’s still in the process of getting to know the manager and staff, he’s been impressed with what he’s seen so far.cheap nfl nike jersey

“I feel like [Guardiola] has a good balance of being focused in intense,” Steffen said. “But with that he brings humor, and he brings just his genuineness, and just kindness. So it’s been cool to see how he works, how his coaching staff works.”

Steffen added that he’s also noticed an increase in how players are treated now that he’s in the Premier League.

“The player care is just more prominent,” he said. “They want us to be fully focused on football, and they really help us out and worry about everything else whether that’s cars, whether it’s banking, whether it’s housing, family stuff. Anything at all, they’re one call away, one text away, and they really make us feel comfortable.”

But for the next week, Steffen’s job will be to integrate himself with a U.S. side that hasn’t played a match since February, with many first choice players rejoining the U.S. team for the first time in over year. Steffen’s last appearance for the U.S. came on Oct. 15, 2019 in a 2-0 loss to Canada in the CONCACAF Nations League.

“The vibe so far has been really good,” he said. “Everybody’s excited to be here and everybody’s excited to see each other, meet one another. Training has been short and sharp and quick. It’s obviously tough when there’s so many new guys and we don’t have so many training days. But now we’re excited for the game, we’re excited to get on the field each day and learn from one another and see what everybody’s really made of.”

Daryl Morey likes Philadelphia 76ers’ roster, says goal is championship

Daryl Morey, speaking Monday for the first time as president of basketball operations of the Philadelphia 76ers, expressed excitement about the championship potential of a roster built around All-Stars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.

“My goal is to win a championship, so whatever gets us there is what we’ll do,” Morey said during a virtual news conference officially announcing his hiring. “But I would say to have two star-plus players in 24 and 26 years old, that is why I couldn’t get Doc Rivers to come interview in Houston.

“He saw this roster and he said, ‘It’s amazing,’ and ‘Sorry I couldn’t fly to Houston to meet with you, Daryl.’ And then, obviously, I end up here a couple weeks later. … It was pretty cool.”

Last month Morey agreed to leave the Houston Rockets, where he had run the team’s basketball operations for more than a decade. At the time, he said he was planning to take a “gap year.”

But on Monday he found himself sitting alongside Rivers (hired as coach last month after a departure from the LA Clippers), general manager Elton Brand (whom Morey is now ahead of on the organizational depth chart) and owner Josh Harris.

“That was my plan,” Morey said of taking a gap year, before adding with a smile, “My kids are giving me a lot of crap about it.nfl cheap nike jerseys

“I’m a pretty competitive guy, but that was my plan. My wife was actually urging me to do that. But Elton and Doc and Josh were relentless, just relentless, as soon as I stepped away. Frankly, the more you look at what Elton has put together, on this roster with Joel and Ben as the headliners but with great players — Al [Horford], Josh [Richardson], Tobias [Harris] and some of the younger players brought in last year — I’m with Doc.8

“He and I have been chatting a lot, and the more you dig into the players that are here, the more you get excited about what this team can do.”

In the span of a month, the Sixers have landed one of the best and most respected coaches and executives in the NBA. Harris said that, in both cases, when he and the rest of the Sixers’ ownership had an opportunity to pursue both men, doing so was a no-brainer.

“You have to be self-reflective,” Harris said. “When we came out of the bubble, we were self-reflective. It didn’t work last year. We were disappointed. And also, it’s hard. People like Doc Rivers, or coaches like Doc Rivers, executives like Daryl Morey, they’re under contract. It’s very hard to get them out of their current situations. It’s very rare they leave current situations, or you have availability to talk to them.nfl nike jerseys cheap china

“So, the minute they were available, we jumped on it, and yeah, I think we’re now really well set up with great leadership and great people. I think it is a new dawn, a new era, and I hope it lasts for a long, long time. And I think hopefully it will yield success on the court. I believe that it will.”

The Sixers entered last season with sky-high expectations, only to fall short. The team was hindered by injuries — most notably to Simmons in the NBA bubble in Orlando, Florida — while the trio of Simmons, Embiid and Horford, in particular, struggled to fit together.

But while Embiid and Simmons are about as big of a departure as one could find from the small-ball, 3-point-shooting team Morey and Mike D’Antoni built with the Rockets, his long-standing philosophy has not been to chase 3-point shooting, but to chase stars. And, repeatedly, Morey went out of his way to praise Embiid’s potential, in particular, during Monday’s news conference.

“Well first I would say, how we play is going to be up to Doc,” Morey said. “But that’s one reason I’m very excited to be here is to work with a championship coach like Doc. I think — and I think he agrees with me, he can jump in — the best way to win in the NBA is to take your talent and figure out how to utilize them the best. Right? It’s not to take your talent and hammer it into a particular system. It’s to try to get the most out of who you have.

“It doesn’t take much to look at when Joel is on the floor and healthy, and he’s been in here twice a day for quite a while, he’s very focused and motivated, this is an unbelievable defensive team. The fact that he’s also an extremely good offensive player … Joel is the kind of player you win championships with if you look back through NBA history. We were trying to build our best team around our talents in Houston, but here Doc is going to take the talent we have and use them to the best of our ability.”

Philadelphia 76ers name Daryl Morey team president; extend GM Elton Brand

The Philadelphia 76ers officially named Daryl Morey president of basketball operations and extended the contract of general manager Elton Brand on Monday.

Morey stepped down as GM of the Houston Rockets this month after blockbuster moves that failed to lead the franchise to the NBA Finals. The Rockets made the playoffs 10 times since Morey was hired in 2007, including the last eight seasons, for the longest active streak in the NBA.nfl nike jerseys cheap china

“Talent like Daryl rarely becomes available, so we moved quickly and aggressively to bring him here,” team owner Josh Harris said. “He has an extraordinary track record of success in this league as an innovator, visionary and leader, and I believe he significantly improves our chances of delivering a championship caliber team to our fans. This offseason, we made it our mission to make this organization better and stronger.”7

Brand was named general manager on Sept. 20, 2018. He helped lead the hiring process that landed coach Doc Rivers early last month.nfl cheap nike jerseys

“This offseason, we made it our mission to make this organization better and stronger. By hiring a tremendous front-office leader in Daryl and championship coach in Doc, as well as extending Elton, we’re proud of what we’ve assembled,” Harris said.

Houston went 640-400 under Morey and won a franchise-record 65 regular-season games in the 2017-18 season.

The Sixers believed they were ready to contend for their first championship in 37 years and Brand spent $180 million to re-sign Tobias Harris and nearly $100 million to sign free agent Al Horford away from Boston. Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid emerged from The Process to become All-Stars and earn hefty contracts but have yet to prove they can carry the Sixers into serious championship contention.

“Thank you to Josh Harris for the trust he has placed in me to lead the 76ers,” Morey said. “I am humbled by the challenge and will work tirelessly to win the hearts of Philadelphia’s legendary fans.”

Colorado knocks Seattle out of first in West

Keegan Rosenberry scored the go-ahead goal late in the first half as the Colorado Rapids defeated the visiting Seattle Sounders FC 3-1 Sunday night.

Andre Shinyashiki and Cole Bassett also scored for the Rapids (6-6-4, 1.38 points per game), who moved into seventh place in the Western Conference based on points per game.

Jordan Morris scored the lone goal for the Sounders (10-5-5, 1.75 ppg), who dropped out of first place in the West behind idle Sporting Kansas City.

MLS announced last week that qualification for the playoffs would be determined by points per match, as Colorado had five games postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Shinyashiki opened the scoring in the 11th minute, taking a cross from Sam Vines and putting a header from 10 yards out just inside the right post. Nicolas Benezet also was credited with an assist.

Morris tied it in the 22nd minute, redirecting a cross from Cristian Roldan into the net from close range.nike cheap nfl jerseys8

Rosenberry made it 2-1 in the 42nd minute. A Colorado corner kick was headed away by Sounders defender Yeimar Gomez Andrade, but the ball fell to Rosenberry, who was about 23 yards out in the middle of the field. His low volley made it through a maze of players and just inside the left post.

The defending MLS Cup champion Sounders nearly tied it in first-half stoppage time, but Colorado goalkeeper William Yarbrough made a left-footed kick save at the near post on a 5-yard shot by Raul Ruidiaz.nfl nike jerseys for cheap

Bassett extended the Rapids’ lead to 3-1 in the 75th minute, scoring on a header from 7 yards out off a free kick from Jack Price.

Yarbrough made two saves for Colorado, and Sounders goalie Stefan Frei stopped seven shots. Colorado outshot Seattle 16-9, including 10-3 in attempts on target.

Struggling New York Jets QB Sam Darnold gets pep talk from Adam Gase

Coming off one of the worst statistical games of his career, New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold received a pep talk and a vote of confidence from coach Adam Gase.

“I just keep thinking, ‘He’s 23, none of this can be easy,'” Gase said Monday, adding that he spoke with Darnold on Sunday night. “He’s a guy that did so much good in college and won a lot of football games. Things haven’t always gone as smoothly as everybody always hopes when they get to the NFL.”

The Jets haven’t won any games this season, as Darnold — expected to make a big jump in the second year under Gase — has shown signs of regression. The slump has fueled questions about Darnold’s future, with speculation the Jets might draft Clemson star Trevor Lawrence if they land the top pick.

In Sunday’s 18-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills, Darnold passed for only 120 yards with two interceptions for a 31.1 passer rating, the second-lowest of his career. It was a horrible offensive performance by the Jets (0-7), who managed only four yards in the second half — the team’s fewest yards in a half in 40 years.nike nfl jerseys cheap china

Gase absolved Darnold of any blame, putting it squarely on the offensive line, which allowed six sacks. Gase said “it was collapsing quick on him” and he “didn’t have a lot of time to throw the ball.” When he did, the throws were tight-window attempts.7

In five starts, Darnold has twice as many interceptions (six) as touchdown passes (three). His numbers have declined from last season in all the major statistical categories.

Gase, hired to develop Darnold, insisted his pupil isn’t going backward.nfl cheap jerseys nike

“If you look at it statistically, we’re not good anywhere statistically,” he said. “What I see in practice a lot of times, I see things that were better than last year. When we get to games, we just have to figure out a way to protect him and let him get in rhythm. I saw some really good things the first half [Sunday]. Then it started getting really muddy in the second half.”

Darnold said he remains upbeat, although he admitted his interception at the end of the first half was “a terrible mistake, something I truly feel won’t happen again.” He called it a “dumb decision,” a pass into heavy coverage.

He was under duress throughout the game, as the Bills cranked up their safety blitzes in the second half. Offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains, calling plays for the first time, had no answers.

The rebuilt offensive line was supposed to be improved this season, but it has allowed 24 sacks.

“I think everyone is frustrated. I don’t think it’s unique to Sam,” guard Greg Van Roten said. “We need to put him in a position to be successful. If we, as an offensive line, are playing like we did [Sunday], we’re not giving him a chance to show what he can do.

Tampa Bay Rays stun Los Angeles Dodgers in World Series Game 4 on dramatic finish at plate

The Tampa Bay Rays won Saturday night’s Game 4 on one of the wildest finishes in World Series history, capitalizing on a disastrous error by the Los Angeles Dodgers to secure an 8-7 come-from-behind victory and tie the series at 2-2.

With two outs and two strikes in the ninth inning, Brett Phillips, a seldom-used outfielder, laced a single to center field off Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen, bringing in the tying run.

Center fielder Chris Taylor kicked the ball, and Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena, who started on first, never stopped running. Taylor threw the ball to first baseman Max Muncy, who relayed it to catcher Will Smith. Arozarena had stumbled around third and was going to be out by 30 feet — until Smith dropped the ball and the ricochet allowed Arozarena to dive home and prompt a celebration that ended with the Rays running gleefully into the outfield.

The 116th World Series entered Saturday without a signature game on its ledger. Safe to say after Game 4, that’s no longer the case.

“Once I saw Randy slip, I was like, ‘Aw, shoot, at least we tied it up,’ and then [Smith] missed the ball,” said Phillips, who had entered the game as a pinch runner in the eighth. “I don’t know what happened, but then he scored. The next thing I know, I’m airplane-ing around the outfield and I get dogpiled and here I am.”

Rays manager Kevin Cash tried to describe his emotions as he watched the final play at the plate unravel.

“The moment the ball left Phillips’ bat, we knew we had a tie ballgame, and then everything that happened afterward, Randy’s not used to having to run like that,” Cash said. “Normally he’s used to just trotting. So it threw him off for a little bit getting tripped up there between third and home. But Phillips, man, give that guy a lot of credit. I don’t know when the last time he got an at-bat was. Pretty impressive what he just did against one of the game’s best closers.nfl cheap nike jerseys

“Happened so fast, I didn’t know what to do. Gave a bunch of hugs, just in disbelief.”7

The emotional pendulum swung wildly in Game 4, with the Dodgers overcoming a pair of blown leads by the same relief pitcher to put themselves in a position for Clayton Kershaw, the fulcrum of the team that has won eight consecutive division titles but lost in its two previous World Series tries, to secure a title in his Game 5 start Sunday.cheap new nike nfl jerseys

The Rays ended that dream in classic fashion — on a wild sequence that Dodgers manager Dave Roberts described as “an unperfect storm.”

“I’m about to live 15 years shorter,” the Rays’ Brandon Lowe said. “I think that kind of sums it up. My God, I think I lost 10 years on that last play. God, that’s a storybook baseball game if I’ve ever been a part of one. That was insane.”

On the final play, only Taylor was charged with an error. Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner said there was no way for Smith to have known Arozarena fell.

“He was trying to catch the ball and put a quick tag down. If he’d have known he fell, he probably would have taken his time and made sure he caught it,” Turner said. “Not sure what happened in center. That’s uncharacteristic for us.”

It had looked grim for the Rays, with blown leads galore all game, thanks to the teams going blow for blow and scoring in eight consecutive half-innings, a World Series record.

With the score tied at 6-6 going into the eighth, Taylor led off with a double off Rays reliever Nick Anderson. A failed sacrifice and groundout later, Anderson needed only to retire Corey Seager to escape the inning. Anderson was not the first pitcher to try and fail on this night or this postseason. Seager looped a single into center field, scoring Taylor and pushing the Dodgers ahead 7-6.

It was the Dodgers’ seventh run of the night scored with two outs and their 17th of the series.

Los Angeles’ bullpen, so permeable in the prior innings, attempted to go into lockdown mode over the final two. After Adam Kolarek secured the first two outs in the eighth, rookie Brusdar Graterol punctuated the third out with his signature celebration.

In the ninth, Jansen tried to work around a single to Kevin Kiermaier and walk to Arozarena. With two outs, on a 1-2 count against Phillips, who hit .196 in the regular season and was 0-for-2 in the playoffs this year, Jansen left a cutter over the plate that Phillips rapped into center.

West Brom hold Burnley to battling 0-0 draw

Promoted West Bromwich Albion and Burnley fought out a 0-0 draw in the Premier League on Monday after both sides missed chances to register a first win of the season in a pulsating clash.

The result left West Brom 17th in the standings on two points from five games, while 18th-placed Burnley have one from four after a dominant second-half performance.

West Brom coach Slaven Bilic was disappointed with the outcome, although he praised his side and conceded a share of the spoils was a fair result.

“I told them after the game we were looking for three points, but they should build on this,” the Croatian told Sky Sports.

“We created a few chances, more than enough to score. They also had a couple to be fair. A draw was probably a fair result.

“We knew these are the games — I respect Burnley a lot — where you really need to win, or at least not lose. If we want to stay up then we have to win these types of games.”cheap nfl jersey wholesale

Striker Karlan Grant took centre stage for West Brom in the first half as he shot over the bar in the 18th minute before he had a goal disallowed for offside in the 37th, after home keeper Sam Johnstone had kept out an Ashley Barnes effort.8

West Brom came close again in the 58th minute when visiting keeper Nick Pope parried a Grady Diangana shot and Branislav Ivanovic had the rebound blocked by a defender.

Chris Wood then twice hit the crossbar for Burnley, having failed to convert an Ashley Westwood cross before he missed with the goal at his mercy after Johnstone parried a Barnes header into his path.

West Brom missed the game’s final chance as Pope produced an acrobatic save to keep out a Matheus Pereira volley from close range in the 78th minute. The outcome was the Premier League’s first goalless draw of the season.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche also rued his side being unable to come away with a win.nfl jerseys discount

“With the quality of chances we had, we could have got three points,” he said.

“It was a strange game, Barnes has one (chance), then there was a moment we deserved a penalty. I think the quality of chances were good, but we didn’t take them.”

Houston Astros’ Zack Greinke says he doesn’t miss fans being in stands

Houston Astros pitcher Zack Greinke said he has enjoyed playing games without fans during the pandemic-shortened season and in the playoffs.

“I don’t really notice fans when the game’s going on, but warming up and practice before games, I mean, for me it’s nice not having fans in the stands,” Greinke said Tuesday before Game 3 of the American League Championship Series against the Tampa Bay Rays. “Most people like it. When the game comes on, it’s the same for me.”

Asked to explain, he said: “Because then there’s no one there to talk to you and ask for autographs and want pictures and all that stuff. I don’t like to do that stuff. It’s nice not having them, for me. Most people like it. I don’t like it.”cheap nike jerseys nfl7

Greinke, the 2009 AL Cy Young Award winner with the Kansas City Royals, discussed during spring training in 2013 that he had social anxiety disorder since before high school but no longer considered it a problem. He did not mention anxiety on Tuesday.

Some fans are being allowed to attend National League Championship Series games in Arlington, Texas, and will be allowed for the World Series, as well. The announced attendance was 10,700 for Monday’s NLCS opener between the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers, not including those who didn’t pay to attend.

Greinke is scheduled to start Game 4 on Wednesday night, with the Astros looking to avoid elimination following their 5-2 loss on Tuesday night. Tampa Bay now holds a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.cheap new nike nfl jerseys

Fans weren’t allowed in for the AL Division Series against the Oakland Athletics at Dodger Stadium or the ALCS at Petco Park in San Diego. Some family members have been allowed in for games in San Diego.

MLB playoffs 2020: Ian Anderson’s emergence makes Atlanta Braves biggest threat to Dodgers

Are the Atlanta Braves the biggest threat to the Los Angeles Dodgers, or is it the other way around? A case could be made for either declaration.

There isn’t a lot we can say definitively about this baseball season, with its short run and wonky, siloed schedule format. The Dodgers have been the consensus pick to win the World Series for months, arguably since Feb. 10 — the day L.A. acquired Mookie Betts from Boston. The regular season only solidified that rough consensus, as the Dodgers posted the fifth-best winning percentage in history, supported by a run differential (plus-136) at least 62% better than every other club in the majors.cheap nfl nike jersey

Yet, there is a problem with such a consensus, beyond the small sample size of a 60-game mini-season. The Dodgers played only nine of the other 29 clubs during the regular season, same as the Braves and everyone else. There were no common opponents among any of the teams who will ultimately meet in the League Championship Series round. Thus declaring the Dodgers as the No. 1 team is an article of speculation, much like a wire service college football poll.8

After Ian Anderson and the deep, veteran Atlanta bullpen throttled the Miami Marlins 2-0 on Wednesday, the Braves are one game away from their second straight sweep to begin the postseason. Three of their four wins have been shutouts. According to ESPN Stats & Information research, only two other teams have ever put up three shutouts in four games to start a postseason. Both of those teams — the 1905 John McGraw New York Giants and the 1966 pre-Earl Weaver Baltimore Orioles — won the World Series.

That’s good trivia but also a side point. The collective 1.13 ERA of the Atlanta pitching staff — including 1.59 for the starting pitchers — suggests that in an era when postseason pitching is so good that teams almost have to hit the ball out of the park to score, the Braves are positioned to go toe-to-toe with anyone. Even the Dodgers.

Anderson has emerged as a phenom since making his big league debut earlier this season. With his 5⅔ shutout innings against Miami on Wednesday, his career line including two postseason starts is 5-2 with a 1.43 ERA, 58 strikeouts in 44 innings and only one home run allowed. The success of Anderson’s changeup is becoming the stuff of legend. According to TruMedia, Anderson has thrown 234 changeups, against which opponents are hitting .079 with a .111 slugging percentage. Good luck with that, hitters.

“It doesn’t seem like the moment ever matters to him,” Braves manager Brian Snitker marveled after Wednesday’s game. “He just keeps pitching and trusting his stuff. [He’s always the] same guy. What a good sign, right?”cheap nfl jerseys china nike

Indeed. While the injuries piled up among the projected members of the Atlanta rotation — 2019 Cy Young contender Mike Soroka and veteran lefty Cole Hamels, while future Hall of Famer Felix Hernandez opted out — the starting staff emerged as the Braves’ Achilles’ heel. The bullpen was outstanding. The offense was almost as potent as that of the Dodgers’ at the bottom line, and was arguably more diverse.
